Wordle tips: 10 strategies that actually work
These aren't fortune-cookie tips — each one is backed by the 1,864 real answers in our archive. Work them into your game one at a time.
01Open with two vowels and a workhorse consonant
Your first guess should maximize information, not try to win. Words like our top-ranked starters cover A or E plus R, S, T, or L — the letters that appear most in real answers. A great opener routinely leaves you with under 50 candidates instead of 500.
02Never re-guess a grey letter
It sounds obvious, yet under pressure players burn rows re-testing letters Wordle already ruled out. Before every guess, mentally delete every grey letter from your alphabet. If you catch yourself reusing one, stop and rethink.
03Respect the double-letter threat
31% of all past answers repeat a letter (LL, EE, OO, SS are the usual suspects). Wordle never tells you a letter appears twice, so when the board refuses to resolve, deliberately test a double before your last rows.
04Move your yellows, always
A yellow letter must change position in your next guess — don't let it drift back to the same slot. If a letter has been yellow twice, that's two positions eliminated; it often only has one legal home left.
05Know the killer patterns
-IGHT (LIGHT, NIGHT, FIGHT, TIGHT, WIGHT…), -OUND (BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND, WOUND) and -ATCH are the great streak-killers: four greens, six candidates, five rows left. When you see one forming, stop guessing answers and probe the differing letters instead.
06Use a "burner" guess to separate lookalikes
Facing SHADE/SHAME/SHAKE with two rows left? Guessing each in turn can lose. Instead play a word containing D, M, and K together — one guess tells you exactly which answer it is. Feels wrong, wins games.
07Endings beat beginnings
Position five is the most predictable slot in Wordle: E has ended 367 answers and Y another 259. When you have four letters and a blank at the end, try E and Y before exotic consonants.
08Y is a vowel until proven otherwise
When your opener finds no A, E, I, O, or U, don't panic-search for obscure vowels — past answers are full of Y-words (GYPSY, NYMPH, LYRIC). Test Y in positions two and four on your next guess.
09Check the archive before a gut guess
The NYT has repeated only a handful of answers since 2021. If your hunch was a solution months ago, it is almost certainly not today's word — look it up in the archive and save the row.
10Play the puzzle, not the panic
Most lost games die on guess five to impatience: a plausible-sounding word that ignores one clue. On your last two rows, slow down and audit every green, yellow, and grey against your candidate. Thirty seconds of checking beats a broken streak.

Common mistakes to unlearn
- Chasing the hole-in-one. Guessing a plausible answer on row two when a probe word would confirm it wastes more games than it wins.
- Forgetting yellows can repeat. A yellow E doesn't rule out a second E elsewhere in the word.
- Ignoring word shape. Consonant clusters (STR-, -NCH, -MPT) narrow candidates far faster than random common letters.
- Speed-running. There's no timer. The best players treat row five like a chess move.
